Full Review

When I first came across this book, I didn’t know exactly what a Dharma was, but after a quick bit of research, I knew it was just what I needed at that time. In the foreword of the book, written by none other than Deepak Chopra, Dharma is described as ‘an ancient Sanskrit term translating to “the evolutionary impulse of the universe” or “your unique purpose in the world.”’ The foreword definitely helped to give authority to the author and her message which was a good start for me as someone fairly new to the subject matter.

The author, Sahara Rose, then provides us with a bit of her own background and achievements in the Introduction and sets out the landscape and tone of the book. Here she describes Dharma as ‘your divine purpose on this planet, your soul’s essence, the unique vibration only you can carry out in the world’. We also learn about her personal journey to discovering her own Dharma which really helps the reader to connect with her.

You quickly get a feel for the author’s voice, which I personally find relatable and accessible – it’s informative, but very ‘human’ and personable, not too formal or academic.

In the first few chapters, Rose goes on to define Dharma in depth and provides examples of when and why we might begin pondering on the concept ourselves, as well as how we can begin the path of discovery.

A nice touch in this book that I really appreciate, and that I’m seeing more and more of in recent times (probably in line with the ever-increasing reduction in our attention spans) is a brief summarised recap at the end of each chapter – ‘A Quick Rundown For You Skimmers’ as they are titled in the book. These really simplify and compact the main message that has been described in a whole lot of detail in the corresponding chapter – very useful if you want a refresh without re-reading the whole chapter!

Rose possesses an expertise in Ayurveda and shares much of her knowledge on this throughout the book, including the Doshas and the Chakra system. Dharma is also a part of this ancient eastern science so when all are used together it becomes a complete, coherent strategy towards discovering (or remembering) a deeper knowledge of self.

Learning about the Doshas and how we can use this knowledge of self and our personal Doshic constitution to live healthier lives and in more alignment with our Dharma was fascinating and something I will keep in mind throughout my own journey. I discovered I am naturally ‘Kapha-Vata’, which I need to balance out by bringing in some more Pitta energy from time to time. I highly recommend looking into this to find out your own Doshic constitution and how you can balance yours to improve your health and wellbeing.

I really value the actionable tools and practices throughout the book which make it possible to take tangible steps towards discovering your Dharma for yourself. I particularly resonated with the Dharma Archetype section as I found this really helpful in practical terms when it came to learning more about myself and which of my characteristics I could focus on to find more purpose, specifically in my career. As an added bonus, I found myself applying these archetypes to other people in my life and I realised it helped me better understand some of my loved ones and improved our relationships as a result!

The Dharma Blueprint provides further actionable tools you can try – the author provides meditations, quizzes and embodiment practices that encourage you to listen to your intuition and be guided by your knowledge of self. You are inspired to think about what makes you feel more expanded and move more towards these things, as it’s the things that excite us the most that lead us to ‘doing our Dharma’.

In conclusion:

By the end of the book, I decided to take ‘Dharma’ to mean our individual soul’s purpose as I happened to be pondering what mine might be at that particular time in my life. I found it inspiring and motivating and have since re-read the book at least once. I have also returned to specific parts of the book several times to remind myself of the wisdom, tools and practices within it. Overall, I enjoyed the way it was written as I found it relatable and easy to understand.

The main question is…did this book help me to discover my dharma?

I would say, yes! Setting out on the journey to discovering something so deep as your dharma is never going to be a quick thing – as the book indicates, it is an ongoing journey of self-discovery that is more about bringing you into alignment with your soul’s purpose through embodiment and practice, than simply finding it, achieving it and ticking it off as a job done. I feel like I am living in more alignment now and moving more in the direction that feels right for me and feels more expansive. Thanks to this book, I know myself way more than before and I can see the path I want to follow with much more clarity.

Thank you Sahara Rose!
